Djair de Barros e Silva was born in Recife, Pernambuco, January 20, 1945. He is the son of José Henrique de Barros e Silva, businessman, and Alice Marques de Barros. Novelli has eight siblings. In 1957, he moved to Garanhuns, in rural Pernambuco, with his family. In 1959, he began daily visits to Rádio Difusor of Garanhuns, where he discovered the new things happening in music at the time. In 1962, when he was 17 years old, he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he had contact with some musicians and sold school bags to support himself. Six months later, his father brought him back home. At the end of 1972, he founded a dance band “Nouvelle Vague” with a group of friends in which he was the crooner and which gave him his stage name, Novelli. In 1965, “Nouvelle Vague” moved to Recife. In that same year, Novelli started playing an acoustic bass in his performance and made it his principal instrument. Months later, he returned to Rio de Janeiro and began working as a bass player in Rio nightclubs. At that time, he met Milton Nascimento, Wagner Tiso and other members of what would come to be the Clube da Esquina (The Corner Club). In 1978, he participated in the recording of the album “Clube da Esquina 2” (The Corner Club 2).
